It’s that time of year once again — time to enjoy A Longwood Christmas at Longwood Gardens, on view until January 7! This year’s display is French-inspired and beautiful. I’ve made one trip already, but I’ll be back for more!
As usual, the outdoor lights are impressive. It’s so fun to see what the designers can accomplish given huge scale and skill. In the conservatory, I’m always blown away by the creativity. My favorite element this year is the floating display in the sunken garden, and I loved the element of surprise with the secret passageway in the music room! Even though I’ve been going to Longwood for years, I really appreciate that there’s something new to see every time I visit. It’s also nice to see some of my favorite items year after, like unconventional Christmas trees made of succulents and air plants.
In addition to the gorgeous floral designs, Longwood pulls out all the stops (literally!) when it comes to special performances during the holidays. Check out the line-up and mark your calendar for:
- Jolly — and loud — singalongs accompanied by the famous Longwood pipe organ: These fun events are free with garden admission and all feature an excellent local organist. Everyone gets a song sheet, and the ballroom sounds so good with everyone’s voices chiming in.
- Christmas performances by local instrumental and choral groups: My friends and I have a tradition of attending a musical performance at Longwood every year, and we have typically seen choral groups. This year, we opted for the Turks Head Brass Quintet, which was wonderful! They chose unconventional selections that were delightful in brass arrangements. My favorite was their rendition of “Welcome Christmas” from How the Grinch Stole Christmas!
There’s so much more to enjoy — don’t miss the open air theatre fountain shows, the strolling musicians, and the garden railway with special holiday decorations! Be sure to read the visiting tips before you buy your timed tickets or make your timed member reservations. You can also pair your visit to Longwood with a trip to downtown Kennett Square, thanks to the Longwood shuttle, available by reservation.
Thanks to Longwood for festive fun every year! I hope to see you soon at the gardens!
